Cardboard Playhouses One of the best ways to keep your rabbit from chewing on things that he shouldn't is to provide him with acceptable distractions. An example of such a distraction, and something that many rabbits enjoy, is a large cardboard box that can be 'remodeled'. Take a cardboard box and cut a door in the front, and
add a window on the side or top. Grocery stores, especially the stores
where you bag your own groceries, and offices with a supply of empty paper
cartons are both excellent sources of free boxes. In fact, member Heccubus
recommends an empty paper carton from the office as a great place to snooze
and hide out.
Member Armani, on the other hand, enjoys a box with a peephole... Things to keep in mind: Make sure that the 'doors' and 'windows' that you add to the box are large enough that your rabbit cannot get his head stuck in one of the holes. To add to the box's 'appeal', consider stuffing it with hay for munching or shredded newspaper for digging. If your rabbit is not a chewer, you can add a towel to the box for your rabbit to rearrange or nap on. Providing a cardboard box allows your rabbit to participate in activities that rabbits find most enjoyable: chewing, digging and hiding out in special, secret places. Best of all, the box can be recycled when it gets dirty or too chewed. You can always get another for free. |
